Lead Me to the Rock

Psalm 61:1-4
To the leader: with stringed instruments. Of David.

1 Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer. 2 From the end of the earth I call to you, when my heart is faint. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I; 3 for you are my refuge, a strong tower against the enemy. 4 Let me abide in your tent forever, find refuge under the shelter of your wings. Selah

This psalm is attributed to David.  David certainly had times when he cried out to God for help.  Whether David or someone else is writing, this psalm reveals the cry of an individual seeking help and refuge from God.  These are words that any of us may have prayed or will pray at some point in our lives.  Maybe you are praying these words right now.  The honest truth is that there are times when God seems distant or we find ourselves overwhelmed and recognize our need for help, assurance, comfort, and safety.

Part of the prayer  (v. 2b) says, “Lead me to the rock…”  It acknowledges that on our own, we can’t get to the high rock of safety and security.  We need help.  We need a strength that is stronger than we could ever produce, and we need a guide that knows the way.  In a word, we need HELP!

As Christians, we know Jesus to be the way; we know Jesus to provide what we need along the way.  The season of Lent calls us to focus on Jesus, to follow him, to narrow our focus on him as we let go of things that distract us or get in the way of following him.  Through Jesus, God hears our cries for help and listens to our prayers.

The words of this psalm assure us that God hears and God listens, especially when we feel lost, confused, overwhelmed, or isolated.  Indeed, God is the rock of our salvation; God is the refuge and shelter that we need.  God will provide and God will continue to lead the way.

Prayer: O God, our Rock and our Refuge, when we feel afraid, lost, or overwhelmed, reassure us of your saving love that Jesus has revealed to us through his life, death, and resurrection.  In the name of Jesus Christ we pray, Amen!
