John 20:30-31; John 21:25

20:30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. 31 But these are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name.

21:25 But there are also many other things that Jesus did; if every one of them were written down, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.

The last two chapters of the gospel according to John tell several stories of the resurrected Jesus appearing to Mary and the disciples. In these selected verses, the gospel writer John asserts that Jesus did many wondrous signs - with hyperbole, John says there were so many things that if indeed they were written down, the whole world could not contain the books!

I can’t help but think of how John is determined to make sure everyone has an opportunity to meet and to know Jesus.  From the beginning of chapter one, John has been saying that he is writing the gospel account, telling the stories of Jesus, and telling the stories of those impacted by their encounter with Jesus, so that YOU MAY KNOW who Jesus is!  John is passionate about sharing this good news with you.

Well, that brings me face to face with the question, how passionate am I about sharing this good news with others?  How passionate are YOU about sharing it with others?  John reveals to me that there is room for improvement on my part.  What about you?

This is the last devotion in my series on the gospel according to John as November 29th is the first Sunday of Advent and we begin a new church year.  I pray that as we turn our attention to the season of Advent in preparation for the celebration of Christmas, let’s be passionate!  Indeed, may we be passionate about telling the story of Jesus and the love of God that Jesus Christ, the son of God, reveals to the whole world.  Let’s share what Jesus means to us, and let’s share what difference it makes in our lives because we know Jesus.  As people turn their eyes toward Christmas, be ready to share what God’s good news for the world is:  that Jesus is the Son of God, and through him, God makes God’s salvation known.
Thanks be to God!  Amen; Come, Lord Jesus!
