Luther on The Walk

John 14:6
I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except by me.

Luther wrote, "I understand what Jesus was saying here. In the simplest way, it applies to only one person, to Christ. Jesus is called the way because he is the beginning, he is called the truth because he's the only one who helps us to continue, and he's called the life because he is at the end. He must be everything, the beginning, the middle and the end of salvation. This is why we place him as the foundation stone upon which all other stones are set, and upon which the entire roof is built. He is the first, middle, and last rung on the ladder to heaven. Through him we begin, we continue, and finally we reach life eternal. There's only one christ, but he assumes different roles in our salvation experience." In the beginning it's sometimes hard to find "the way", and "the life" becomes more difficult as we continue to walk "the way", and it becomes really hard when we've traveled on that way for a long time and are about to reach the end, heaven. But if you will hold on to Christ in faith, then you're at least starting in the right place. If you remain in him; you're walking on the right path. And if you persevere until the end, you will know salvation. Christ wants to pry your hearts away from trusting anything less, for there is no other way, no other highway, bridge, or path for us to walk, except for Christ alone.
