Creation Choir

Psalm 19:1-4a

1 The heavens are telling the glory of God; and the firmament proclaims his handiwork. 2 Day to day pours forth speech, and night to night declares knowledge. 3 There is no speech, nor are there words; their voice is not heard; 4 yet their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world.

At the time of this writing, we are just entering the month of March, and we are nearing the halfway point of our journey through Lent.  The psalmist lifts up the proclamation of creation - “the heavens are telling the glory of God; and the firmament proclaims his handiwork.”  I think of the weather changes we’ve experienced these past few weeks --- from zero degrees to almost fifty degrees; a solid blanket of snow covering everything to melted snow and signs of new life starting to break through the ground.  (Jeff has pointed out that perhaps I didn’t plant the flower bulbs deep enough... sorry.)  Birds are crowding around the bird feeders, and, in a not-so-pleasant way, skunks are making their presence known.  Ah yes, this is nature and signs of spring.

The psalmist points out in verse 3 that we are not always aware of this creation choir; sometimes we aren’t listening and therefore, we do not hear.  If we aren’t hearing it, then we probably aren’t seeing what God is doing either.  Perhaps the winter days have kept you housebound, unable to get out for a breath of fresh air or a glimpse of God’s “glory telling” creation - but it’s there.  All of it is proclaiming God’s handiwork; the songs of nature are singing their praise; the heavens rejoice; the earth springs forth with life (and not always because I planted the bulbs too shallow).  The winter season will give way to spring, and the signs of new life will abound.  We aren’t there just yet, but we see the signs, and we trust it is coming.  So it is with Lent --- we are still moving toward Holy Week.  Easter is not yet here, but we trust it is coming.

For now, let this be our prayer - Creator God, help us to be diligent in our listening and watching as the heavens tell of your glory and all of creation displays your handiwork, so that we, too, are eager to join the creation choir that sings praise to you, through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen!
